Why FireDepartment.net is back

FireDepartment.net ran for 13 years. Before it closed in 2023, more than 8,000 fire departments had signed up and the site drew millions of visitors a year for over a decade. Then Google changed its rankings so that sites with a lot of out-of-date information lost most of their traffic, and ours fell to roughly a quarter to a third of what it had been within a month.

The lesson was that accuracy matters more than size. This time every listing is dated and sourced, and recruitment is built around departments that are actively looking for volunteers.
