Questions about volunteering
Is it paid?
Volunteer positions are generally unpaid. Some departments offer a stipend, pay per call, or other benefits. Ask the department what it offers.
Do I need experience?
No. Departments train the volunteers they accept. Experience in medicine, driving large vehicles or the trades is welcome but not required.
How old do I have to be?
Most departments require volunteers who respond to calls to be 18. Some run cadet or junior programs for younger people.
Do I have to live in the district?
Usually you need to live or work close enough to reach the station quickly when paged. Each department sets its own distance. Start with the departments in your county in the directory.
How fit do I need to be?
Firefighting is physical work. Many departments require a medical exam or a physical ability test. Support roles have lighter physical demands.
Can I help without fighting fires?
Yes. Departments need people for medical calls, driving, public education, fundraising, equipment and logistics. See volunteer roles.
How much time does it take?
It varies by department. See time commitment for what adds up and what to ask.
What happens to my application?
It goes to the participating department you applied to, and FireDepartment.net keeps a copy to help with follow-up. See our privacy page.
